menu edit in gutsy

I edited the menu on my gutsy laptop, adding a category, and an item in the
category. I also checked the box for these to be visible. But when closing
the edit dialog, the menu isn't updated. When I go back to edit menus, the
new menu category is not selected, and the item I added previously is no
longer there.

Is there something I'm missing? Or is there a way to manually add these
entries ?
