Read/write NTFS from Ubuntu

I can boot a Knoppix CD then read NTFS file systems directly//. I think 
I  recall having actually written to an NTFS file system as well, and  I 
believe this is to be possible with Ubuntu is dual booted with XP. Can 
someone confirm this, please?

If I must first install a driver or a package , what driver or package?

I would be happy to have a reference to the "Fine Manual" or "HOW TO" I 
should have read but do not know where it is.
