And you can't restore to different hardware. Maybe the target disk can
be a different size, but the drivers etc are all specific to the machine
that was backed up. This only relevant if the disk being backed up is a
system disk, of course.

This has been done for you, several times. Just google around for rsync
and backup and you'll find several neat sets of scripts that provide
varying degrees of flexibility.
