I had the similar problems with a Dell Inspiron 6000. This guide solved
it for me though:

"Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide"
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

(For me, the solution involved running ran "alsamixer" in a terminal. A
"terminal-UI" program opens. Navigate between the controls with
left-arrow and right-arrow. I navigated to a control number five or so
(counted from the left) and "unmuted" it, by pressing 'm'. See also "man
alsamixer". Note that I pretty much have no idea why or how this
worked).
