No Sound At All!

I wish I knew (but not enough to actually troubleshoot it myself!)

Mine's an Inspiron 6000, but it uses the same Intel chipset. I _used_ to
find that immediately after boot, I always had sound, but that it would
disappear after I'd been running KDE for some time.  Now that's not even
true.

It seems that something grabs the soundcard and doesn't let the sound daemon
access it.
