Whether WPA 1 & 2 are supported depends on your card and driver, if I'm
not mistaken. I use a Broadcom 4306 card with the bcm43xx driver, and WPA
1 at least is supported. ( I am using it here on my laptop ).
I would check your card for capabilities - see for instance
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessCardsSupported
You can determine your card type by entering
lspci -v | less
in a terminal ( Applications - Accessories - Terminal) on your live CD, for
example. Scroll down to see which card you have, then compare against the
information on the page I have linked above.
