Hi Eric

I personally haven't tried for a text install from the live cd but have seen 
someone mention it. Not sure it's there or how, but I can vouch for the 
alternate cd which uses the text install and is quite straight forward to 
setup. I've done some googling for now and from what I can see, the alternate 
cd would be the way to go. I've used that on my newer laptop when I couldn't 
get the live cd to work and it's a walk in the park to get thru. So that'd be 
my suggestion
