I think it's a VMware problem. I've experienced problems with their site
in the past. On the day that they went public I couldn't get them to
resolve for nearly 2 hours & I'm about 12 miles from their HQ. Even then
the site was bouncing up and down like a yo-yo for the rest of the day.
Their www.vmware.com website resolves off of an akamai pool, so that
might be part of the problem as well. Could be that the dns actually
started resolving in the time that it took you to reboot into the win.
But in the future you can always try using their fixed DNS':
Name Server[whois+dns with ip] NS1.VMWARE.COM 208.48.65.105
Name Server[whois+dns with ip] NS4.VMWARE.COM 65.113.40.4
