Gutsy failure

I have a Toshiba Laptop and external d-link wireless card which is seen
by Gutsy as wired even with the recommended patch.
So its back to Feisty for now but there is a problem after the install
and reboot the login gives me a white screen with no place to click.
Somewhere there is a corrupt config file on /home which is a separate
partition from /.
I have root console access so I can rescue the work files from /home.
Do I delete a particular config file or start totally over and format
both / and /home?
My desktop is Suse 10.0 and these things just work but after ten days
Ubuntu is a problem. I use it because the laptop is small memory and
small in HD.
