Getting sound with Flash web objects

David, Arijit, and NoOp:
I am making some progress, but still no sound. I have Firefox 2.0.0.6 (not
2.0.0.8) installed with the Flash 9.0.48.0 plugin. But no sound. I now know
that there must be a system problem, not just a problem with Firefox. What is
odd is that Rhythmbox works fine. So there is a functioning sound system, and
the speakers are plugged in and turned on, and so forth. But no sound with
anything else. Specifically, I went to System/Preferences/Sound/Sounds. The
Log out and Log in sounds are set (to Logout and Login, amazingly). But when I
hit "Play" neither of these sounds are played. It seems to me that something
that I need to turn on is missing.
Again, in the Sound Preferences, the only setting for sound playback that works
(either with the Test, or to get Rhythmbox working) is ADC Capture/Standard PCM
Playback. This was not the installation default.
Does anyone have an idea of what I have to do to make sound work on my system?
As always, many thanks to anyone that has a helpful suggestion.
