Window manager question

After upgrading to 7.10, I find that when I open an application the
window is often not opened in the current workspace, but appears to
straddle the current one and the one to the right.

Is there a way of controlling how windows are opened?  It's irritating
to have to keep dragging the window to the left, and rather makes a
nonesense of the idea of having different "Desks".
