Appearance appears to hung

I use a KVM swich (NTI UNIMUX) to work between two machines (one
running a new installation of Gutsy and the other Windows XP).  System
-> Preferences -> Appearance seems to freeze.  I can switch between
window styles (e.g., Human to Glossy), but can't get any of the other
tabs (fonts, etc.) to come up.  

I don't want to unhook the KVM switch yet.  Does this look like a
problem of the KVM switch?    Thanks in advance,
