Compiz ?

Just ran fresh install of gutsy.  desktop effects errors out withe either _cannot load_ or _cant add plugin_ .  There are lots of google hits, but so far the first 3 or 4 I tried implementing have only resulted in getting me from the first error msg to the second.  Can someone here point me to what I need to check for to see if I am on the right track ?
I can post xorg and other config info if needed.  Thanks for the help.  It has gotten a little frustrating over the last 2 days.
