Personally I'd _purge_ all of your sound & media programs and reinstall
them. If at all possible do as much as you can from synaptics rather
than the command line; I've noticed that some packages are not matched
at the command line w/synaptics on this system after upgrade. For
example: if I install Dia (sudo apt-get install dia) from the command
line it says it's installed, but it fails to run. However if I search
synaptics, synaptics now has it listed as 'dia-gnome'. Installed that
and now Dia works. Packages are showing up in two locations:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/graphics/dia
[universe]

and

http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/gnome/dia-gnome

Could be that you're running into similar problems on your media packages.
