Hi Dapo.

The 600e is a very good machine, but due to it's hardware
specifications, I would recommend to install Xubunu 7.10 instead of
Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

It is much lighter and therefore works much faster on your hardware.

Furthermore, the best place to start for anything that is Linux on
Thinkpad related, is http://www.thinkwiki.org.
