External Hard Drives and UBUNTU

When plugged in (USB?) it should mount to the desktop.  In the 
filesystem it should be under /media/<volumename>.

I'd usually reformat it if it's not going to be used on a Windows 
system...ext3 so it carries UID/GUID and permissions.  If cross platform 
use, format or re-format FAT32.
