Ouch. How much memory do they have? I've seen computers become totally
unresponsive and sit there spinning the disk when they run out of
memory, and sometimes it takes a while for the out-of-memory process
killer to kick in (although that was an ancient 486 server rather than a
desktop, and I didn't have the patience to wait 5 hours).

Can you log into a text console and run top to see what processes are
spinning?
