Compiz on 7.10 with ATI X1600

I can't help, sorry, but I had the same problem with an installation I
made for someone else. The card was Radeon X1950. Because of the thight
schedule I couldn't investigate further or file a bug report.

Your laptop seems to have a Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics chip and
AMD/Ati chips are known to have more problems in Linux.
