Screwed-up desktop in Gutsy

Hi, all --

I just loaded Gutsy on my computer.  It seems to work OK -- except for 
one thing.  All of the files and directories in my home directory appear 
on the desktop!  There's a directory marked Desktop  that includes what 
it's supposed to (almost empty -- just a terminal), but a whole lot more 
stuff appears.  Any ideas why?
