Which notebook?

Meg,
I would suggest checking http://www.linux-laptop.net/  first before 
purchasing a laptop for linux.

Like somebody else suggested, you can purchase ubuntu pre-installed from 
dell. http://www.dell.com/linux

I am running three laptops with linux
HP pavilion dv1000 ubuntu 7.04 works out of the box (3 year old machine)
Thinkpad x60 7.04 works out of the box
Thinkpad x61s 7.10 works out of the box


Personally, I would recommend a thinkpad because of their build quality 
compared to Dells. Although, I see a reduction thinkpad's quality after 
lenovo has taken over its production.
