Please excuse the typos, they made my post harder to read than
necessary. I'll try again, with a few more details:
There is no supported direct upgrade path from 6.06 to 7.10. You can
either upgrade in steps from 6.06 -> 6.10 -> 7.04 -> 7.10 (which in fact
is too much work and you would be better off by reinstalling), or you
can wait for the next release with Long Term Support (LTS). The next LTS
will be released in 2008, probably April, and hence be called 8.04 (the
development codename is Hardy Heron).
6.06 was also an LTS, and Ubuntu promises a direct upgrade path from
each LTS the next LTS, so you will be able to upgrade 6.06 -> 8.04.
