mplayer fullscreen + compiz

I think you mean it does, but you get a small picture in the middle of a
large black screen.

Enabling the 'zoom' option of mplayer will fix that, if your CPU is fast
enough.  Anything powerful enough to run Compiz ought to be powerful
enough to do software scaling, which is what mplayer's 'zoom' means.

Both, and also X.org as well.  The whole architecture is not ready for
integrating accelerated video into a 3D desktop (although I've heard
that Compiz has some plugin that acts as a workaround).  People are
working to fix that.

In the meantime you can use the workaround I suggested (x11 with
software scaling).

This is not impossible, but somebody first has to add nice effects to
