Hello Brian,
It's so nice to get your email.
The same with me, I'm a long time RH/Centos user. Setting up LDAP client using 
authconfig is very convenience (at least in RH). That's why I'm wondering it 
will be the same in Ubuntu too. Let me try it and report the result here.
