Is "a cross cable" a null modem cable. (Are you connecting to the
computers' serial ports? You aren't using a router?)

If so, then a program that can be run on both computers is minicom (find
it with synaptic.)

Start the program in a terminal and hit Control-A then z and
communication parameters can be entered.
