Problems with ATI Radeon 2600 on Gutsy

I tried it out and it worked.. however I had to manually install build
the driver packages.. (which is not the user friendly way how Ubuntu
should work) also it was a bit time consuming.

So far everything works now, excepted compiz-fusion. I'm not sure, but
Gutsy comes with compiz enabled by default.. is it also enabled by
default if you use XGL with proprietary driver or is this just for
GPUS which work with AIGLX?
