japanese + gutsy

Hi,
I use my computer in japanese. I install it in english, then add the
japanese repo. At first japanese fonts look horrible but after setting
the login screen to japanese it looks ok.
Today i upgraded to gutsy RC and japanese works but with the ugly fonts.
I tried to add the .fonts.conf file as stated in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Japanese_Input_and_Fonts_in_Ubuntu_7.04#head-cc5838f1788f0c64b38bfdc6a3b329d01f8ccb56
or the old method for dapper (adding a local.conf file in /etc/fonts)
but to no avail.

Did anyone had success with it? In edgy and feisty setting the loggin
screen was enought to get the antialiased fonts.
