Hello community,

Hello Mario.

I am in this process... trying to understand the ubuntu ambient, and simultaneously trying to install
programs or functions inside my computer.

When I say "ambient" I am trying to explain the whole scope of UBUNTU... it is: the whole envrironment (graphics, icons, programs, functions... where an ignorant as me can interact in his own computer)...

Well. I have downloaded a program, supported by Mario's advise. the name of this program is Kaffeine... it presents this information:

Kaffeine

Kaffeine is a full-featured multimedia player for KDE. It uses xine as back-end by default, but also works with gstreamer and KPlayer if installed. It supports DVD playback with menus, multiple playlists, a 10-band equalizer, and a CD cover manager. It rips and burns audio CDs to mp3 and ogg vorbis, streams audio and video and supports LIRC. For more information, visit the [WWW] Kaffeine web site.

So I did arrived in this direction

http://kaffeine.kde.org/

and pressed the "download" hyperlink

Then, I got in this dilemma:

Current stable version: 0.8.5
Requirements:

    * xine-lib 1.0.2 - http://www.xinehq.de (1.1.7 recommended)
    * KDE 3.2 - http://www.kde.org

So, I decided to click in the first option:
* xine-lib 1.0.2 - http://www.xinehq.de (1.1.7 recommended)

After this, this was written

Step 1: Download and install xine-lib

xine-lib is the xine core engine, it is needed for all frontends and applications that use xine. You can find build and installation instructions here
xine-lib
xine-engine and many plugins, required
xine-lib-1.1.8.tar.bz2
xine-lib-1.1.7.tar.bz2
xine-lib-1.1.6.tar.bz2
xine-lib-1.1.5.tar.bz2
xine-lib-1.1.4.tar.bz2

And I decided to click in the first option:

xine-lib-1.1.8.tar.bz2

And, finally, I got into Step 2.

Step 2: Download and install a frontend

A lot of different frontends exist today for various tastes and purposes. Most of them are media/dvd-player like frontends, but there are also frontends for special purposes like browser and file manager plugins.

And I installed this frontend

xine-ui-0.99.5.tar.gz

The downloads came in the environment (or ambient) as mere documents and folders, but not in icons or direct-executable acces to the Xine program..

I did click on the DVD icon, that shows the precense of the "comercial DVD movie".. and nothing happens...

¿What should I do?

The DVD program is in my Desktop, shown as a document-box as this:

/home/gerardo/Desktop/xine-ui-0.99.5.tar.gz

Please help
