X always saves the log of its previous start as /var/log/X.0.log.old.
Unless this behavior has changed in gutsy, X.0.log.old should be a log
of X's initial failed start with X.0.log being a log of the
bulletproofX's successful start.
Also, I believe you can modify /etc/gdm/gdm.conf to change whether or
not gdm restarts X in failsafe mode.
