"Network manager" is a daemon that doesn't care about your desktop, so it
runs on all of them. Then there's an NM applet for each of Gnome & KDE
which provides the front end.

None that really improve anything... They all seem to have their benefits
and drawbacks. I tried everything I could find when I started having
trouble with NM, and now I'm back to NM.
