So maybe mutt is not what you're looking for.
Try pine, or it's little brother, alpine (which is in universe). It
can be used as a smtp/ssmtp client. If you're trying to send mail
directly from a home computer, connected to a ISP, you'll notice some
mailservers will block your mails. In this case, you need to use your
ISP's smtp server. You'll still need to fix fetchmail, but then it
will be just for local delivery, so you can try another
