gutsy gibbon as a persistent live cd

I did some testing in QEMU with the live cd iso image and found out that
using the same memorystick and live cd in QEMU the persistency works
fine.
So that leaves me with the following question:
Why is the memorystick discovered for use as casper-rw partition on some
hardware (QEMU bios and virtual hardware) but isn't it on other hardware
(same machine, but not inside QEMU, now running on an Intel 915GM
chipset with USB 2.0 on my Acer Travelmate 2420).

Is it known that persistency is hardware dependent?

Cheers,

Dolf.
