gutsy gibbon as a persistent live cd

Hi Guys,
Since I am travelling around at the moment without my trusty laptop
(well, I am sending it home soon) I am trying to get a Ubuntu live cd
to work with my memorystick for persistency so I can get rid of all
those virus infested untrustworthy windows computers in internet
cafe's and work on a nice Ubuntu install there.
The thing is, I can't get the live cd to be persistent. I followed the
how-to on wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveCDPersistence. I have a usb stick with
just one ext2 partition labeled casper-rw (I actually tried it on 2
different sticks, one of 1GB and another of 256MB).
I then start the live cd with the boot option "persistent" added after
the quiet splash -- (when hitting F6).
The live cd starts ok but nothing is done with the usb stick. In the
end it is just mounted as any other usb device would be and nothing is
written to it.
Below I append the output of dumpe2fs for the memorystick and the
first part of my syslog (dates and hostname removed to save space). I
hope anyone can advise me how to solve this problem.
I am not using a bootable USB stick directly since I can't be sure
that the computers I will be using will be able to boot from USB. I
have bigger chances of success when booting form CD-ROM.
Thanks,
Dolf.
