lockup when X starts??

For the last week, X locks up shortly after starting.

The GDM greeter screen is OK, but after logging in, I only get about 10
seconds before X locks up.

The mouse still moves, but mouse and keyboard input (including
CTL-ALT-F1) are ignored.

I haven't tried logging in remotely, but suspect it would work fine, I
really think it's just X that is locked.

If I use those ten seconds to hit CTL-ALT-F1, I get back to a text
console - and everything works just fine. The text console works, I can
run programs etc, and I can switch back to the X screen and all is well.

Any ideas? I suspect one of the updates that I've applied recently, but
dpkg.log shows rather a lot of possible candidates, including updates to
the kernel and fglrx.

Because I generally sleep this machine rather than shut it down (i.e., I
very rarely log right out), and this problem arises only on starting X
from GDM, the time window where an offending upgrade may have occurred
is very large.

So can anyone help me narrow it down?

Regards, K.
