I guess -D and "make install" are the defaults. The general form,
according to the manpage:

checkinstall [options]  [install command]

And then there is:

DESCRIPTION
checkinstall  is  a  program  that monitors an installation procedure
(such as make install, install.sh )

So I guess that omitting the install command is fine if you need the
default, but it can be used even if the installer requires a different
command. Nice to know :)
