mpeg- and avi-probs since upgrade to gutsy

Hello list,

since I upgraded my feisty to gutsy, I have problems viewing all kind of
videos - mpeg, avi and ogg. You can still hear the sound, but I see only
some moving stripes.

Starting vlc from the shell gives no clue, what could go wrong:
>vlc out.ogg
VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
[00000281] main playlist: stopping playback

Is there any experience with this problem?
