Try:
sudo cfdisk /dev/sda (scsi type - newer)
or (depending on your harddisk type)
sudo cfdisk /dev/hda (pci type - older)
Be careful - but then you should be able to see free space of your harddisk.
Your explanation looks a bit confusing to me *smile*
Seems that you are mixing harddisk space and partition space.
