I've only used Firestarter to do quick configuration of a personal
firewall - can't say I've ever left it running for more than 5 or 10
minutes.  Not sure why it's quitting on you, but if you're just
interested in who your PC is talking to: check out etherape.  It will
show you a graphic representation of connections and the amount of
bandwidth used by each one.
