No sound in Ubuntu 7.10

Christian,
One thing that I figured out is that when I go to
System -> etc... -> Sound, there is a menu where I can
select my sound device. I am trying to use some
speakers that use a USB port. The admin screen allows
you to test the device by playing a tone through the
speakers. That works fine for me.
However, some applications aren't using the USB
connection. RealPlayer isn't working but other
applications play sound through my USB speakers just
fine. I am stuck on that one.
However, the Admin screen helped me to isolate the
problem. Ubuntu recognizes the speakers just fine.
It may help you narrow down your problem.
