Gutsy Video Problem, ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY on Sony PCG-Z1RMP laptop

Hi,

I upgraded a Sony Vaio PCG-Z1RMP from Feisty to Gusty. It was working
perfectly before, still does to a point now, but the graphics are
extremely slow and some icons (like the panel network-manager applet
icon) and occasional menu or other thing that pops up when I hover
over it are unreadable. They look like white-noise static on a tv,
completely distorted.

lspci tells me that my graphics card is:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY

xorg.conf has:
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon Mobility M6 LY
[Radeon Mobility 9000]"
        Driver "radeon"

Other symptoms include really slow window movement, jerkiness, etc.
If I shell out (control-alt-F1) and do an "ls -l --color=auto"
everything is in greyscale rather than the colours I'd expect.

Any suggestions?

-James
