Hi,
I remember a problem I had before a little bit like this. 5 mn until the
login screen and after, some commands lasted a long time.
I installed xfce-desktop (I was on Gnome Ubuntu), the problem
disappeared. And I found that the cause was my sound-card on Gnome only.
The system was trying to "wake up" or initialize my sound card without
success. It was on Ubuntu 6.06. I had some warning on the message log .
I unchecked everything about sound (System/Preference/Sound/ -> Sound)
and the problem was gone. One bug was opened already if I remember good.
So you can try to install xfce-desktop, on the top of Ubuntu or Kunbuntu
and choose xfce desktop and default session...then reboot.
We never know...
