A rather laborious search of the Archives reveals a thread in the
December 2006 archive titled "Gmail ???." Towards the end of that
thread there is mention of Gmail accounts not seeing their original
posting, complete with a citation to the Google Mail help pages,
specifically this one:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=6588&query=mailing
+list&topic=&type=f&ctx=search
In a nutshell, the fine folks at Google automatically skip the inbox
on any messages you post to a mailing list to "save you time and
clutter." The messages do appear in Sent Mail and All Mail.
Not a solution, but at least understanding. It makes threaded
message reading strange to say the least.
