high cpu useage

Yeah but what's important is how much CPU time is X using ? Same for
Firefox and the next couple of programs. X normally (on my desktop)
using about 1.3 %, firefox less than that. The only problem I have ever
had was using a specific theme on Icewm.

Gkrellm and some of its plugins can also be problems sometimes. What are
you running on the laptop that you don't run on the desktop?
