install fetchmail and dovecot on your server. Use fetchmail to retrieve
e-mails from gmail (you need to enable POP in Gmail). Dovecot will be
your IMAP server to can connect to with Thunderbird. (You can use a
cron job to run fetchmail at whatever interval works for you. That way,
you don't actually have to run Fetchmail as root in deamon mode)
Another trick I use, where appropriate, is to let Thunderbird Fetch the
mail from the POP server then use a folder filter to move all messages
from Local Inbox into my Imap inbox.
