This would be from your user-specific configs in $HOME, which do not get
purged - apt/dpkg leaves your $HOME alone.

Sounds like you are getting some weird stuff happening - do you get the
same symptoms if you create a new user and try from there? ( e.g. create a
user "test" and add that user to your groups etc. )
