How to explicitly drop dynamic network connection in favor of static one?

In a perfect world maybe but it just isn't so.  Maybe by the time we get
to Gutsy it will be.  I continually have problems with Network Manager
and switch to dhcp on more than one laptop.  Sometimes it works great,
other times....
