I guess that's what I meant by the "application finder".  On some
debian-based distro I've used "application finder" was an entry on the KDE
menu, and must have run update-menus.  I guess menu-xdg is supposed to run
that automatically now, in the post-install script.  Why it didn't, I don't
know.
