Changing nvidia legacy drivers seriously reduces my resolution;(

I am running xubuntu on a oldish box (800 Ghz, 250MB). It uses a
nvidia graphics card:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV5M64 [RIVA
TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro] (rev 15)

This seems to work with the nvidia-glx-legacy drivers but when I go
into the xorg.config and change nv to nvidia or use the command line
until to do similar when I restart X my max resolution goes from
1600x1200 to 1224*768 (not sure if these are totally correct). Maybe
it is that the on board memory on the card is a problem.

Any ideas appreciated.
