XSane 0.991 works just fine for my Dapper-->Edgy-->Feisty upgraded
system using my Canon Pixma MP750 USB connected scanner. Gimp scan (via
XSane) works as well. I think I the only changes may be that I added
pixma or mfg ID to the /etc/sane.d/xsane/dll.conf file and made sure
that the scanner group (System|Administration|Users and Groups included
my users.

Not sure it this will help, but you might have a look at:
http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man5/sane-plustek.5.html
and

CONFIGURATION

To use your scanner with this backend, you need at least two
entries in
       the configuration file
       /usr/local/etc/sane.d/plustek.conf

       [usb] vendor-id product-id

       device /dev/usbscanner
