I had a similar problem a few months ago where i tried running ubuntu 6
from the live cd. turned out that the cd drive i was booting it from had
a failing cd laser in it. so therefore, the cd drive was no longer
good.
I tried ubuntu on another good working drive and it worked. This may be
the same story for you, and it may not. Have you tried running those
cd's on a different computer/cd-rom?
