It has to do with licensing issues. If you read the documentation
carefully, you can see that you may be breaking the law as you install
DVD software on your system, for example.
The proprietary operating systems have greased some palms (paid
license fees) on your behalf.
Something to ponder: How much would the typical linux user want to
spend to make it "easy" and "legal" at the same time?
